本作では、「海神・龍神」にまつわる物語をリサーチし、1953年に本放送を開始したテレビをはじめとする「映像での報道」の原初を探ることで、「ゴジラ」が1954年からいままで世界に咆哮を轟かせながら、映像というメディアを介して伝播してきた、その神話的な存在感に迫る。

戦争や災害を、より身近な情報として知り得るわたしたちは、それが単なる情報ではなく身に差し迫る「現在」であると感じ始めている。これまで諸所に出現してきたゴジラは、時代に即したバッドでビッグなやつ*として新しい話題を、ゴジラ自身が巻き起こしてきた。今の時代に現れる「新しい」ゴジラは、ゴジラ自身ではなく、むしろ変わり始めている現在の「わたしたち」の見方によって作り出されるのではないか。

テレビも見なくなった人々にとって、ビッグな脅威は手のひらの小さなスマホで見る方が実感を得られる。その脅威が孕む内心的な恐れというのは、バッドでビッグなものがもつ「神話」にあるだろう。その神話を、スマホからも、テレビからも飛び出た、目の前の「報道」として、ひとたびゴジラを表したい。

In this work, we research myths and stories surrounding sea gods and dragon deities, while tracing the origins of “visual reportage” — beginning with the television broadcast that launched in 1953 — to examine the mythic presence of Godzilla, which has roared across the world since 1954, propagating itself through the medium of moving image.

We who have come to know war and disaster as something close at hand — as readily accessible information — are beginning to feel that these are not merely data points, but an urgent, immediate “present.” Godzilla, appearing across different eras, has always stirred new conversation as the bad and big thing* of its time. Perhaps the “new” Godzilla that emerges today is not created by Godzilla itself, but rather by the shifting way in which we have begun to see the world.

For those who no longer watch television, a massive threat feels more real when viewed on a small smartphone in the palm of one’s hand. The inner fear that such a threat carries lies in the “myth” of something bad and big. It is this myth — bursting free from both the smartphone and the television screen — that we wish to embody, just once, as a piece of “reportage” unfolding right before your eyes.
